An other beautiful natural phenomenon with an interesting background story are the Mzima Springs, a series of four natural springs.

The source of these Springs are the Chyulu hills in the north. Because of the porous volcanic lava stone and ash that make up these hills, they are not strong enough to let river water flow. As a result, all the rainwater penetrates the rocks into the earth. This rainwater can spend 25 years of subsurface before flowing towards the Mzima Springs. Since  other waters are too far to reach overland, the Mzima Springs are the only water source for the hippos and crocodiles. This therefore forms a beautiful scenery for visitors.

It is even possible to jump out of your safari vehicle and have a little hike around the springs.

Although the big five is present in Tsavo West National Park, it will be harder to spot because of lower wildlife densities.

With its size of 9065km², Tsavo West National Park is the little brother of Tsavo East National Park. While Tsavo East consists of large plains, Tsavo West is surrounded by rocky bulges that provide a more mountainous backdrop. On a beautiful, clear day it will even be possible to see the snowy peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

One of the most famous rock creations are the Shetani lava flows, which were formed only a few hundred years ago. Shetani means "devil" in Kiswahili and locals believed it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. The charcoal black lava flow is 8km long and has a width of 1.6km making it one of the largest volcanic crater-fields and nature trails in the country. The views on this trail are spectacular, but you need to be wary of wildlife in this area, as there are predators about.
