Named after the  indigenous Samburu people whose villages border the reserve, Samburu National Reserve is the most popular park in Northern Kenya. It is a lesser-known park but nevertheless definitely worth a visit. Located 350km north from Nairobi, in a rougher, warm and desert-like climate, this environment gives a good impression of another part of Kenya.

Wanting to visit Kenya, you have undoubtedly heard of “the big five”. Did you know that Samburu National Reserve even has its own special big five?

For bird lovers the reserve presents a constant display of exciting avian life – over 450 species. On game drives over the savannah and through acacia forest there will be numerous opportunities to view kingfishers, marabous, vultures, guinea fowls, Somali ostriches, egrets, falcons and eagles.

But despite the active wildlife here, the reserve gives off a sense of tranquility and a peaceful feeling. Some attribute this to the fact that Samburu is relatively remote and initially was inaccessible as other parks developed.

The grevy's zebra, the long-necked reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx and the Somali ostrich form this group.

This is also one of the few parks where you will get the chance to spot an African wild dog.
