Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Nakuru National Park is a popular Kenyan destination. It is located in the rift valley of Kenya, 170km from Nairobi.
With its 188km² this park is not very big but it has a lot to offer.
The deep blue water of the lake attracts many different bird species. Where Lake Nakuru used to be known for its very large number of flamingos, this has been greatly reduced in recent years. Luckily, the flamingos are accompanied by other birds such as kingfishers, ostriches, pelicans, storks, eagles and herons. This way you get an impressive view on the lake where you can stretch your legs during your safari to take some nice pictures of this beautiful scenery.
The park itself is a combination of grasslands, hills and forests and is a home for zebras, baboons, waterbucks, hyenas, hippos, buffalos and with some luck also leopards and lions.
But what the park is mostly known for, is hosting a number of endangered but very beautiful animal species. The self-sufficient Rothschild Giraffe can be found there, as well as the white and black rhinos.
Because the park is fenced to protect the rhinos and giraffes, you will not encounter an elephant in this park.
